Not long after, Joan finds herself stuck in a rest house in the middle of the desert. Blanche however feels quite satisfied with her life, even if she did travel on a very long and rocky road to get to her current destination. Because Joan thinks her life is much better than Blanche’s. When Blanche tells Joan the story of her life, that she followed her heart with mixed results and that she moved down in social status because of her marriage, Joan pities her.

Returning from a visit to her daughter in Iraq, she comes across an old school friend, Blanche Haggard. Joan Scudamore is a complacent woman who’s married to a lawyer and has three children. Agatha Christie described this book as “the one book that has satisfied me completely - the book I always wanted to write.” That was all the motivation I needed to pick this one up.
